Shipley Community Radio

Bob Parker

The inaugural broadcast of Shipley Community Radio was beamed out to a wide area of Shipley for ten days in May, during the Shipley MAD (Music and Dance) Festival, from a vacant shop in the town centre. The station proved to be hugely successful, due mainly to the hard work and planning put in by the radio partnership, of which Shipley Online is a member. This was a true partnership venture and could not have been brought off without the involvement of any one member of the project team.

Broadcasts, on a limited licence, covered many aspects of community life in Shipley and were carried out, by local people, with a high level of professionalism. An open invitation was issued to community groups and individuals to visit the station to let listeners hear about the many diverse activities going on in the area. This invitation was taken up by many and some days as many as twenty representatives of a whole variety of groups came in to spread the word about what they did. This not only made very interesting listening but was also valuable in promoting the aims of these groups to a wider audience.

The station's daytime programming was designed to have a broad based public appeal. An entertaining mix of music, interviews, public information and open discussion sessions was very popular. In the evenings it was the turn of young people, who were given an opportunity to produce programmes aimed at other young people.

The whole Shipley radio experience was one that everybody involved in this project is keen to repeat. It provided a genuinely needed service to local communities, excellent radio listening and was greatly enjoyed by all who were actively involved.

Unfortunately, the cost of the exercise and the licensing regulations limit the opportunities to do this on a regular basis. We are currently exploring various avenues of funding and hope not only to broadcast again in the near future, but also set up a permanent studio in Shipley linked to Bradford Community Broadcasting's studio in Bradford.
