SHIPLEY LETS
Local Exchange Trading System
For anyone living or working in: Baildon, Baildon Green, Frizinghall, Nab Wood, Saltaire, Shipley, Windhill, Wrose...

What is Shipley LETS?
Local Exchange Trading Systems (LETS) are networks in which people use a LETS currency (Nuts & Bolts in Shipley) to pay for goods and services offered by other members. The system is run entirely by its members and helps share skills to support our community. Shipley LETS started in December 1997 and has over 20 members who traded over 1500 Nuts in the first year.

How does it work?

Members have an account and cheque book, which uses Nuts & Bolts, the local LETS currency.

  • One Nut (N) is like one pound (£), one Bolt (b) like a penny (p).
  • Skills, goods and resources are listed in the LETS directory
  • When a job is finished, or goods are sold, members write out a Nuts & Bolts cheque to record the payment.
  • Completed cheques are sent to the office for processing
  • You receive regular statements telling you how many Nuts & Bolts you have traded

Shipley LETS is a non-profit making group run and managed with the cooperation of its members. We have a core group, open to all, which assists with the day to day running of the scheme. Trading is in units known as NUTS and BOLTS. Members have a cheque book and are regularly sent a directory of goods and services offered by members. No interest is paid to or charged on accounts.

Who can join?
Individuals, community groups, businesses & other organisations are all welcome.

How do I join?

Fill in a simple form (obtainable from the address below) with your contact details and items you would like to offer or request. To cover the cost of postage and stationery there is a once-only joining fee of £2 – £10, whatever you want to pay. Additionally you pay 1 NUT from your account for each directory produced (6 a year).

  • You will get a LETS directory, cheque book and an information leaflet. You are then ready to start trading.
Come and meet us at one of our social & trading events

We have frequent events where members (and prospective members) can meet each other, have fun and do some LETS trading. These have included table top sales, shared meals, a barbecue and games in Northcliffe Park, and a bonfire party.

The true wealth of our communities lies in the skills and resources we have, not the amount of cash available. LETSystems are innovative trading networks where people use a local currency to pay for goods and services offered by other members.
